The capital of Malaysia is only a 4-5 hours bus ride from Singapore, and is actual quite different! Although the population is made of the same three main ethnic groups as Singapore, i.e. the Chinese, the Malays and the Indians, The main difference lies in the fact that although the majority of Singapourians have Chinese backgrounds, the majority of the KL population have Malay background. Kuala Lumpur is in many ways similar to Singapore, with a China Town, a Little India, and Arab Quaters, but feels more like an authentic Asian city due to the traditional architecture, slighly less 'modern' than Singapore. You will find in KL great food, better night Markets than Singapore with great outdoor food stalls. Transports are no way as good as Singapore though, and do make sure to ask for the fee before starting your taxi ride... The metro and bus systems are pretty hectic so do arm yourself with patience, and adopt the 'Malay style': Chill!

There are a few museums to see, the botanic garden is a delicious break from the traffic, although its a bit of a fight to reach! The Petronas Towers are an obvious site, and are located in the most modern part of KL.

There are many ways to reach KL from Singapore. The easiest is to book a bus ticket in one of the many shops at the Golden Mile Tower on Beach Road. If you want to save up a little and don't mind the hustle, it is also possible to cross the border by public transport and go to Larkin Bus station in Johor Bahru. From there, bus depart to KL every 15-30 minutes.

To get out of the city, visit the impressive Hindu Temples at Batu Caves, where great climbing can be done as well!
